SMC invests in new aircraft

Southern mapping Company (SMC) recently purchased its own aircraft. In 2009, SMC was the first company in the world to acquire the ALTM Orion M200 Lidar system. This system is one of the most compact airborne Lidar systems available and is much smaller than the company’s existing surveying equipment and allowed SMC to purchase a low-hour Cessna 206 in pristine condition. This aircraft is a proven performer in Southern Africa and has already been audited and added to SMC’s Hart Aviation Certification. The Cessna 206 successfully completed its first project in March.

Existing, larger aircraft are leased and are ideal to use for projects further north of South Africa. They are, however, more expensive to operate, hence the decision to acquire a smaller aircraft.

The aim of this purchase is to lower the cost of acquiring data on projects in South Africa and neighbouring countries. SMC will be offering clients with projects in these locations competitive pricing for both their mobilisation and survey rate.

These include civil engineering and infrastructure development, mineral explorations and mine management, environmental planning and rehabilitation, and urban and agricultural planning.
