Southern Mapping Company (Pty) Ltd conducts surveys in Africa and the rest of the world and was founded in December 2006.

Norman Banks

Chief Executive – Norman graduated from the University of Natal in 1984 with a degree in Land Surveying. He joined the Eskom Transmission Land Survey Department in 1985 and, after completing articles, registered as a Professional Land Surveyor in 1987. From 1987 to 1996 he was involved in cadastral surveys, power line route selection and survey, precise control and monitoring surveys on power stations, as well managing the Land Survey CAD Office, responsible for power line plans and environmental map production.

Jannie Engelke

Sales Director – Jannie completed his studies in 1991 with a HND in Survey and worked in Eskom Transmission Land Survey Department on power line route selection and surveys as well as precise surveys on power and sub stations. He was also involved in environmental studies, public participation and management plans for power lines. During this time, he took part in the studies for providing 22kV power to end users by induction from high voltage power lines. From 2002 onwards as Operational Manager; he was in charge of all field operations across Africa. This role also included Civil Aviation approvals for aircraft and helicopter installations. He is registered with Plato as a Surveyor’ as well as a member of the South African Geomatics Institution (SAGI) and is an Affiliate Member of the Institute of Mine Surveyors of South Africa.

Jim Vaughan

Technical Director – Jim graduated from Natal University in 1972 with a degree in Land Surveying. He then did his articles with the office of the Surveyor General in Zimbabwe and registered as a Professional Land Surveyor in 1974. He moved to the Bulawayo office where he was mainly occupied with cadastral and control surveys as well as cadastral examining. He subsequently joined the firm of Maxwell, Richardson and Henry as a partner in the late seventies. In 1982 he joined Eskom in South Africa, where he was employed as a Land Surveyor, Senior Land Surveyor (power stations) and manager of GIS at various stages.

Kevin Moodley

Chief Financial Officer – Kevin hails from Durban, Kwazulu Natal and obtained various degrees (BCom, DNFIS and BTech) at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Unisa. Kevin comes with a solid understanding and technical qualifications in the fields of commerce and informatics. With a wealth of board and fiduciary duty experience, he has worked closely with the FD, MD and HR directors on the management of financial, strategic and projects issues. He participates in setting of annual budgets, engineering acquisitions and joint ventures, as well as corporate restructuring.

 

Mark Coote

Technical and Development Manager – Mark graduated from the University of Pretoria with a degree in Geoinformatics in 2007. He joined the Processing Department of Southern Mapping in 2008 and was a Lidar Data Processor until early 2014. In 2013 he obtained his Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management from the University of Witwatersrand Business School. In 2014 he took on the role of Operations Manager at Southern Mapping and late in 2015, the position of Technical and Development Manager where he currently manages technical projects and the Processing Department.

Andre Wehmeyer

Aviation Operations Manager –  Andre Graduated from the University of Port Elizabeth in 1976 with a B Comm Degree.  He held various managerial positions and directorships in a number of companies and industries. Andre also has vast experience in Human Resources and Industrial Relations, but was introduced to aviation in 1996 where he found his niche. He has since flourished in the industry and has found it to be both stimulating and challenging.
